CIMA, FIRST IN MALAYSIA TO INSTALL INTEGRATED ALTERNATIVE FUEL COMBUSTION SYSTEM USING TYRES AND BIOMASS WASTE

Technology by Japan’s Taiheiyo Engineering Corporation, Result of G-to-G Cooperation between Japan and Malaysia

BAHAU, 17 March 2014 – Cement Industries of Malaysia Berhad (CIMA), a wholly-owned subsidiary of UEM Group Berhad and one of the largest cement manufacturer in Malaysia, has successfully installed an alternative fuel combustion system from Japan’s Taiheiyo Engineering Corporation (TEC) which allows the company to use tyres and biomass waste such as palm kernel shell and empty fruit bunch as an alternative source of fuel.

TEC, the provider of the new technology has fitted CIMA’s plant in Bahau with a chlorine bypass system and coating solution system which prevents chlorine and sulfur coating formation and allows cement manufacturer to utilise alternative fuels such as tyres, palm kernel shell and other biomass to provide thermal energy for its clinker production. The chlorine bypass system and coating solution system was installed as sulfur can be found in limestone, coal and alternative fuel while chlorine can be traced from the alternative fuels. The move makes CIMA the first cement manufacturer in the country with such technology and capability.

The main benefits of using waste as alternative fuel in the cement production process are to ensure that waste materials are reused in a responsible manner instead of being disposed in landfills and to reduce usage of non-renewable energy resources such as coal which in turn will result in significant reduction of carbon dioxide emissions.

A completion ceremony was held today at CIMA’s plant in Bahau and on hand to witness the event was Datuk Seri Nurmala Abd. Rahim Secretary General of Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities (MPIC) who was present on behalf of Yang Berhormat Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities.

Also in attendance was Datuk Dr. Choo Yuen May, Director General of Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB), Datuk Dr. Salmiah Ahmad, Director General of Malaysian Rubber Board (MRB), Keiko Aikawa, Commercial Attaché of the Japanese Embassy, Munehiko Tsuchiya, Executive Directorof New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) and Haruo Tsuyuki President of Taiheiyo Engineering Corporation.

The implementation of the technology was the result of a Government to Government cooperation between Japan and Malaysia. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed in 2012 between NEDO, MPOB and MRB which then led to a successful implementation by the private sector of both countries represented by TEC and CIMA.

Yang Berhormat Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas in his speech delivered by Datuk Seri Nurmala Abd. Rahim said, “I take this opportunity to commend NEDO for facilitating this technology transfer, and to TEC for providing the equipment and technology. I would also like to record my appreciation to CIMA for agreeing to be the first cement manufacturer in Malaysia to install such technology at its plant. I also urge all cement producers to take advantage of the opportunity presented by these various organisations today and strive towards continual improvement in their manufacturing process.

The Malaysian government has identified biomass as one of the growth areas towards creating wealth from waste. The National Biomass Strategy 2020, outlines the framework and the potential of the biomass in creating higher value-added economic activities. The National Biomass strategy envisages a potential contribution of Gross National Income of RM30 billion by 2020. In this context, this project is significant in generating wealth from biomass.”

“We have for some time now been searching at innovative technologies that would allow us to optimise sustainable practices by utilising multiple types of waste to provide the thermal energy required for our production. With this state-of-the-art technology by TEC in place, we can reduce energy costs through the utilization of tyres and biomass up to amaximum 30%, while at the same time playing an active role in reducing  our carbon footprint,” said Mohd Yusri Md Yusof, Managing Director of CIMA.

CIMA has been involved in the manufacturing and distribution of cement and related activities since 1975. It has two plants located in Bahau and Bukit Ketri, Perlis with a combined clinker production of 4.6 million tonnes per annum and a total cement production capacity of 7.2 million tonnes per annum.
